Box Score Calvin College outscored Wabash 42-19 in the second half of Friday's Bluejay Basketball Tournament at Elmhurst College to give the Knights an 83-56 victory. The Little Giants will play Elmhurst in the consolation game Saturday afternoon.
Wabash connected on four of its 31 shot attempts in the final period for 12.9 percent. The offensive drought allowed Calvin to stretch its four-point halftime lead to as many as 29 points. The Little Giants went scoreless for the first six minutes of the second half before
Colten Craigin ended the streak with a jumper from the right side.
Kasey Oetting and
Pete Nicksic added the only other baskets in the half for Wabash in the loss.
The Little Giants hung with Calvin (8-2) in the first half.
Daniel Purvlicis scored the first basket of the game for Wabash, followed by a five-point outburst by fellow freshman
Ross Sponsler on a layup and a long-range three-pointer to put the Little Giants up 7-4 in the first two minutes of the game. Oetting added back-to-back triples to put Wabash up 13-4, forcing the Knights to call a timeout. Calvin rode a 12-2 scoring run over the next four minutes to take a one-point lead, paced by Tyler Kruis on the way to a team-high 15 points. Calvin would stretch its lead to as many as 10 points before Purvlicis and Oetting combined to trim the advantage to four points in the final two minutes of the opening period.
Wabash (3-7) shot 14-of-33 from the floor in the first period, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. The second half struggles came included a 1-of-11 effort from behind the arc.
Oetting finished with 16 points to lead both teams in scoring. Sponsler added 13 points, while Purvlicis finished with 11.
Tipoff for Saturday's consolation game between Wabash and Elmhurst is set for 2 p.m. (CST).
