Box Score Wabash commited 22 turnovers leading to 19 points for Elmhurst College as the host school earned an 80-66 victory in Saturday's consolation game of the Bluejay Tournament.
The 22 miscues were a season high for the Little Giants. The previous evening Wabash set a season low with nine turnovers in a loss to Calvin in the opening round of the tourney.
Despite the turnovers, freshmen
Daniel Purvlicis and
Ross Sponsler — along with juniors
Andy Walsh — nearly provided enough firepower to keep the Little Giants in the game.
Wabash never led, but cut a nine-point Bluejays lead to four points after back-to-back baskets by Purvlicis, who finished with 18 points to top all Little Giant scorers while equaling his best effort of the season. Elmhurst used a full-court press and an aggresive matchup defense to put constant pressure on Wabash, taking a double-digit lead it would never relinquish.
Sponsler drilled two three-pointers midway through the final period to prevent the Bluejays from stretching the lead any higher than 18 points, but fouled out of the contest with 13 points with more than 13 minutes remaining in the game. Walsh picked up the hot shooting from outside. The junior hit three triples to score a season-best 13 points in the loss.
D'Ante Foster tormented the Little Giants at both ends of the floor. He finished with a game-high 20 points to go with six steals and three assists. Bryant Ackerman and Nick Sanford each added 12 points for Elmhurst (4-7).
Wabash (3-8) will return to Chadwick Court and to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Friday, January 4 with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Hiram College.
