Box Score Wabash cut an Ohio Wesleyan halftime lead from nine points to five in the early minutes of the second half. The 22nd-ranked Battling Bishops eventually opened up a 23-point advantage on the way to an 80-62 win Wednesday night.
Ross Sponsler scored a season-best 21 points while
Kyle Aiton added 13 points for Wabash. Aiton,
Gary Ulrich, and the rest of the Little Giants' defense held Taylor Rieger to one basket and three total points. Rieger entered the game as the leading scorer for OWU, averaging 15 points a game.
The Little Giants erased an early five-point lead by the Bishops with two triples from Sponsler and a pair of free throws by
Austin Burton to take a 15-13 lead with 11:13 left to play in the first half. OWU (11-3, 5-2 NCAC) regained the lead on a three-point basket by Matt Jeske, who came off the bench to score 11 points.
The Little Giants stayed close, cutting the lead to 21-20 with another Sponsler three-pointer with 4:09 remaining the first half. Wabash would not score again the rest of period, allowing the Battling Bishops to take the nine-point halftime edge.
Marcus Kammrath opened the final period with a hook shot, followed by another basket by Sponsler to draw the Little Giants to within five points. Once again, OWU mounted an offensive run by outscoring Wabash 18-6 over the next six minutes. The Little Giants would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
While Wabash kept Rieger in check offensively, Dre White led OWU with 20 points. Seth Clark chipped in 15, while Reuel Rogers scored 11 to go with seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Kasey Oetting came off the bench to score eight points for Wabash. Sponsler's four rebound were a game-high for the Little Giants.
Wabash (3-10, 2-5 NCAC) will play host to Kenyon College Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
