Little Giants Extend Winning Streak to Three

Andy Walsh scored 15 points --- all on three-point baskets in the first half --- to help Wabash to a 73-70 win Sunday over Allegheny. The victory extended the Little Giants' winning streak to three straight games.
Box Score The Wabash basketball team extended its winning streak to three games with a 73-70 victory Sunday at Allegheny College. The win also gave the Little Giants a weekend sweep of North Coast Athletic Conference opponents after claiming a 63-56 victory at Hiram College Saturday as part of the longest road trip of the season.

Wabash led 43-36 at halftime thanks to red-hot shooting. The Little Giants connected on 17-of-31 shot attempts, using a combination of a strong inside game and the sharp shooting of senior Andy Walsh. Walsh scored 15 points in the opening period, hitting 5-of-7 three-point tries. Marcus Kammrath and Daniel Purvlicis provided the inside scoring for Wabash in the first half, combining for 10 points. Kyle Aiton, fresh off his 22-point effort Saturday against Hiram, tossed in 10 points in the first half to boost the Little Giants to the seven-point edge at the break.

The Little Giants cooled their shooting hands in the second half, but still managed to push their lead to 14 points with 11:23 left to play on three free throws by Austin Burton. Nearly a third of the Wabash second-half points came from the free throw line. The Little Giants hit just eight baskets over the final 20 minutes, including a pair of three-pointers.

Ryan Stanko, John O'Donnell, and Evan Zabriski sparked a quick run for the Gators (3-8, 0-5 NCAC) to trim the lead to six before Purvlicis ended a four-minute scoring drought for Wabash. Aiton added a layup to stretch the lead back to double digits, but Allegheny refused to go down quietly.

After a Marcus Corona layup, Stanko tossed in a pair of free throws to bring the Gators to within six. Another basket, this time a tipped offensive rebound by Zabriski with 5:42 remaining made it a 64-60 contest. Aiton scored the final basket of the game for the Little Giants on a layup with 5:10 left, scoring his 16th point of the game. He added a free throw to put the Little Giants in front by five.

Stanko answered with a three-pointer to cut the Wabash lead to 67-65. Aiton scored two more free throws with just over four minutes remaining. Josh Valentic's layup trimmed the lead back to two points to set up the final series of plays.

Wabash fouled Corona with 3:14 left to play, giving the Gators a chance to tie the game. However, Corona only hit one of two free throw attempts. Burton was fouled grabbing the rebound and hit one of two free throws at the other end to give the Little Giants a 70-68 edge. Kammrath added two more free throws a minute later to stretch the advantage to four points. Valentic scored the final basket for the Gators on a jump shot with 1:21 left to play. Wabash missed two shots on the offensive end, but the Little Giants grabbed offensive rebounds both times.

However, a late turnover with 19 seconds left to play gave Allegheny an opportunity to try and pull out the victory. Valentic fired a jump shot with five seconds remaining that missed. Purvlicis grabbed the rebound and was fouled. The sophomore missed his free throw attempt, but crashed the boards and collected his own missed shot and was fouled once again with one second left on the game clock. This time he hit one of two free throws to provide the final three-point margin.

Five Wabash players scored in double figures, led by Aiton with 19 points. Walsh was held scoreless in the second half, finishing with 15 points. Purvlicis added 11 points and seven rebounds. Kammrath and Burton each scored 10 points. Gary Ulrich grabbed eight boards and handed out six assists from his guard position to pace the Little Giants in both categories.

Stanko finished with 23 points to lead Allegheny in scoring Corona scored 11 points and Valentic tallied 10 points.

Wabash begins the home portion of the 2014 season Saturday with an NCAC contest against Denison University. Tipoff at Chadwick Court is set for 3 p.m.
