Box Score Career-highs from
Logan White and
Harrison Hallstrom inside, combined with 19 points from
Colten Garland outside, provided Wabash a 74-65 win at Kenyon College Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Little Giants overcame a sluggish two-minute start to the game before a 10-2 scoring run provided a lead they never relinquished on the way to their first North Coast Athletic Conference win of the season.
Â
Wabash (3-5, 1-2 NCAC) played without leading scorer
Evan Frank, who missed the game recovering from an allergic reaction during Wednesday night's loss at Ohio Wesleyan. Hallstrom was more than able to take Frank's spot in the post, scoring 14 points in 14 minutes of action in the second half of that game. He and White each scored career-highs in the Saturday matchup against Kenyon with 22 points apiece. White also grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds.
Â
The Little Giants committed a pair of turnovers on their first two possessions of the game. Kenyon (2-5, 1-2 NCAC) took advantage, netting a jumper from Will Sigl and a three-point basket from Alexander Powell to take a 5-0 lead. Hallstrom and White responded with baskets to cut the lead to one point, followed by a three-pointer by Garland in response to a basket from Ethan Shapiro, tying the game at 7-7. Garland added another triple that gave Wabash the 10-7 advantage.
Â
"I just didn't like our look for the first 90 seconds of the game," Wabash head coach
Kyle Brumett said. "I felt the guys were concentrating, they did a good job taking in the scouting report, and I thought our warmup was ok, but when the ball went up I just didn't like the way we looked. I don't remember what I said to them during that early timeout, but I just wanted to reinforce what we were trying to do and settle them down a bit. After that timeout I thought we were about as good as we've been offensively at any time this season."
Â
Wabash stretched the lead to 12 points with 7:57 remaining in the first half, eventually taking a 37-26 lead to the locker room at halftime after a 14-point effort from Garland in the period.
Â
"We've been talking about the ball movement from one side of the floor to the other and not being stagnant. Credit to Colten for finding open spots behind some screens. Credit
CJ McMann and
Ronald Ryan for getting the ball to Colten when our screens got him open. We had a lot of good things going in the first half."
Â
White and Hallstrom took over inside in the second half. The duo tallied 30 of their 44 points over the final 20 minutes of the game to prevent a Kenyon comeback after the host Lords had trimmed to lead to four points in the first three minutes of the second half. White's jumper and a layup by
Ronald Ryan in final two minutes pushed the advantage back to eight points for the Little Giants. Hallstrom closed out the victory with four free throws in the final minute.
Â
Wabash entered the game shooting 59 percent from the free throw line, but connected on 13-of-15 shots from the stripe for 86.7 percent.
Â
"It wasn't necessarily the percentage or how many free throws we made, it was who made them,"Â Brumett said. "We have struggled with our interior players' free throw shooting my entire time at Wabash. It's such a big part of how we play. We want to be a smash-mouth team. We want to throw the ball inside and that wears on the opponent. It was Logan and Harry making free throws late in the game. It's exciting to see.
Â
"We knew Kenyon was going to make a run at us. I thought our guys handled it really well. The second half was a gutsy, gritty performance. We made some shots at key times. We rode Logan more than we ever have. I thought it was a huge game for him to step up and be as confident as he was offensively. If he's going to play as well as he has defensively and on the glass, we really need him in the game. The fact he's really learning how to be a threat offensively makes him dangerous and make us a lot better as a team."
Matt Shifrin scored 14 points to pace Kenyon. Powell and Phillip Crampton each talled 13 points.
Â
Wabash returns to action Saturday, December 17 for a 7 p.m. tip against Hiram College.
