Wabash competed in a triple-dual relay meet Saturday at Eastern Illinois University against the Division I Panthers as well as DI St. Louis University and DII opponent Maryville College. The Little Giants took wins over Eastern and Maryville and stayed close with the scholarship St. Louis program.
The Little Giants defeated Eastern Illinois120-82 and knocked off Maryville 146-30. St. Louis captured a 131-81 win in head-to-head scoring.
Wabash got off to a good start at the meet by posting a win in the second event of competition, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The freshmen foursome of
Benny Liang,
Joey Karczewski,
Anthony Mendez, and
Jacob Riley touched the wall first out of five relay teams entered in the event with a combined time of 1:28.54. The 400-yard medley relay quartet of
Dane Gray,
Hunter Jones,
David Johnson, and
Colt O'Brien finished third overall with a time of 3:42.73 in the first event of the day.
The Little Giants added second- and third-place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle relay.
Chris Dabrowski and
Kevin Sheridan combined to take second with a time of 10:02.06, just ahead of teammates
Kyle Louks and
Wyatt Tarter in third at 10:16.49.
Johnson, Gray, and Karczewksi placed second in the 300-yard backstroke relay by posting a time of 2:43.90. Riley and O'Brien were joined by Tarter and Louks to place third in the 500-yard free relay by finishing in 4:22.55.
Liang, Jones, Gray, and Mendez placed second in the 4x100-yard individual medley relay with a combined time of 3:47.79. The 400-free relay team of Sheridan, Mendez, Dabrowski, and Tarter turned in a time of 3:21.68 to place third in that event.
Anthony Repay,
Sam Colaiacova, and Dan McCormick took fourth place in the 300 breaststroke relay (3:12.22).
Wabash closed as well as it started, grabbing second place in the 300 butterfly relay. Johnson, O'Brien, and Louks finished in 2:45.03. The Little Giants quartet of Karczewski, Jones, Liang, and Riley combined for a time of 1:37.71 in the final event, the 200-yard medley relay, to finish 67/100ths of a second behind the winning foursome from Saint Louis University.
"This was a good meet for us," Wabash head coach
Brent Noble said of his team's trip to his alma mater. "Our backstroke group was very strong. They really demonstrated a lot of improvement for us. The 200 freestyle relay that won was very good, as was the 200 medley relay that almost defeated Saint Louis. I was really very happy with the way we swam in addition to the results."
The Little Giants will spend the remainder of the semester training prior to kicking off the 2017 portion of their schedule on January 13 at home against Illinois Wesleyan University.
