Little Giants Fall in Overtime Heartbreaker to Webster

Wabash Finishes Fouth in Lopata Classic; Davidson Nameed to All-Tourney Team

Box Score The consolation game of the 34th Lopata Classic between Wabash College and Webster University featured big scoring runs, clutch plays, and another big night for the Little Giants' high-scoring freshman. Unfortunately the game ended in a 93-91 overtime loss for Wabash and fourth-place finish in the tournament.

Wabash freshman Jack Davidson earned a place on the all-tournament team after scoring a game-high 23 points less than 24 hours after tallying 19 points in his collegiate debut on Friday versus the Washington University in St. Louis team. The first-year guard nearly provided Wabash (0-2) the win with a half-court three-point shot just ahead of the final overtime buzzer. The shot was on line, but grazed the front of the rim and fell away to end the game with a two-point win for Webster (1-10.

The Little Giants got off to another slow start offensively in similar fashion to the beginning of the previous evening's game against the Bears. Wabash fell behind 9-0 in the first two minutes and trailed 12-3 before going on an 18-0 scoring run over the next five minutes.

Wabash extended its lead to 13 points before settling for a 51-42 lead at the end of the first half. Baskets by Ben Stachowski and Alex Eberhard along with free throws from Davidson and Harrison Hallstrom pushed the lead to 15 points in favor of the Little Giants in the first five minutes of the second half.

The Little Giants would not score a basket from the field over the next seven minutes, allowing Webster to close to within four points at 66-62. The Gorloks tied the score at 76-76 with 4:48 remaining in regulation. Wabash moved back in front by three points, but Webster rallied again to even the score at 82-82 with 2:12 remaining before adding a pair of free throws to retake the lead at 84-82. Eberhard tied the game with just over a minute left in the second half, but Webster's Nigel Wilcox scored two of his eight points with 22 second showing on the second-half clock for an 86-84 lead.

Davidson answered for Wabash, driving the lane for layup with 11 seconds left to tie the game at 86-86 to force a five-minute overtime.

Hallstrom provided Wabash a two-point lead to start the extra session with a layup, but a pair of free throws by the Gorloks' Josh Johnson knotted the game at 88-88. Webster regained the lead when Christian Crepo connected on a jumper with 3:41 left to play to put the Gorloks in front 90-88. Logan White got free in the paint for a layup to tie the game at 90-90, but Johnson nailed two more free throws as part of his team-high 18 points for Webster to put his team in front 92-90.

Davidson was fouled on the ensuing possession and stepped to the line for a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining in overtime. The freshman calmly hit the first free toss, but the second hit just long off the back iron. Webster grabbed the rebound, forcing Wabash to foul to stop the clock. The Gorloks' Rodson Etienne hit one of the two free throws, forcing the Little Giants to try and score with less than two seconds remaining. Davidson took the ball and raced down the floor, launching shot just before the buzzer sounded to try and win the game, but the attempt fell just short the mark, ending the game in a two-point victory for Webster.

Wabash shot 46.2 percent from the field on 30-of-65 shooting, including 13-of-28 from three-point range for 46.4 percent. The Little Giants won the rebounding battle 44 to 36. Stachowski finished with 14 points before an ankle injury ended his night prior to the overtime session. Hallstrom scored 12 points and Colten Garland chipped in 11 before fouling out of the game.

The Little Giants return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday, opening the home portion of their schedule November 27 against Earlham College. Tipoff at Chadwick Court is at 7:30 p.m.
