Wabash Captures Indiana DIII Track and Field Championship

Wabash captured its second consecutive and sixth overall Indiana Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday at DePauw University.
 
The Little Giants scored a total of 244.5 points to easily outdistance the other eight teams. Rose-Hulman finished second with a score of 180 points. Trine took third place with 105 points. Hanover (71 points), DePauw (56), Earlham (45), Manchester (40.5), Franklin (16), and Anderson (11) rounded out the team scoring.
 
Wabash captured four individual titles and two first-place relay finishes as part of its championship effort. RaShawn Jones captured the top spot in the 110-meter hurdles, racing across the finish line in 14.93. Josh Wiggins finished second at 15.08 with Leo Warbington earning fourth place with a time of 15.87. Wiggins claimed first place in the 400-meter hurdles by finishing in 56.07. Max Bigler finished third overall with a time of 57.73 ahead of Warbington in fourth place at 58.57. Rogeno Malone placed sixth with a time of 59.67.
 
Preston Whaley won the 400-meter dash by finishing the race in 49.51. Tyler Ramsey scored a third-place finish by completing the race in 50.43. Jose Franco added a fifth-place finish with a time of 50.55. Andrew Young placed seventh overall with a time of 51.25.
 
Max Bigler cleared 1.95 meters (6 feet, 4.75 inches) to win the high jump. Ahmaud Hill placed third with a top height of 1.79 meters (5 feet, 10 inches). PJ Mays topped out at 1.74 meters (5 feet, 8.50 inches) to tie for sixth place overall.
 
The Wabash foursome of Isaac Avant, Wiggins, Brady Gossett, and Leon Ivy won the 4x100-meter relay by breaking the former meet record of 42.37 set in 2016 with a new record time of 42.27. Whaley, Young, Ramsey, and Franco combined to win the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 3:20.96.  
 
Gossett scored a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash by finishing in 22.33. Whaley added a fourth-place finish at 22.45 while Franco placed seventh with a time of 22.54. Gossett also placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.14. Wiggins finished in 11.19 to place fifth overall. Ivy crossed the line in 11.20 for a seventh-place finish. Keith Abramson ran to second place in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:57.11. Joe Deiser finished fifth overall with a time of 1:58.96. Hunter Wakefield scored a seventh-place finish with a time of 1:59.43.
 
Whaley scored two second-place finishes in the long jump and triple jump at the meet. He turned in a top effort of 6.52 meters (21 feet, 4.75 inches) to earn runner-up honors in the long jump. His top mark of 13.88 meters (45 feet, 6.50 inches) to place second in the triple jump. Jared Strehl finish fourth in the long jump with a top leap of 6.22 meters (20 feet, 5 inches). Ivy finished eighth with a best effort of 5.99 meters (19 feet, 8 inches). Hill scored a fifth-place finish triple jump with a top mark of 12.25 meters (40 feet, 2.25 inches), finishing ahead of Mays in sixth place with a mark of 12.06 meters (39 feet, 7 inches).
 
Isaiah Campbell turned in a top distance of 14.45 meters (47 feet, 5 inches) to place second in the shot put for the Little Giants. Daniel Howe added a second-place finish in the discus throw with a best effort of 44.14 meters (144 feet, 10 inches). Donnie Mader picked up a third-place finish with a top mark of 43.95 inches (144 feet, 2 inches). Hunter Baehl produced a top toss of 49.19 meters to place second in the javelin throw. Chad Wunderlich added a third-place finish with a top mark of 46.33 meters (152 feet).
 
Dominic Patacsil ran to a third-place finish with a time of 15:08.06 in the 5,000-meter run. All three top finishers in the race eclipsed the former meet record time of 15:16.27 held by former Little Giant runner Nick Boyce.
 
Lucas Bender cleared a height of 4.20 meters (13 feer, 9.25 inches) to place fourth in the pole vault. Hill added another top-eight finish for the day with a top height of 3.90 meters (12 feet, 9.50 inches) to finish seventh overall. Ethan Pine finished fourth in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:57.96. The top-four finishers in the race all bettered the former meet record of 3:58.31 also held by Boyce. Deiser finished fifth overall with a time of 4:03.12.
 
Russell Berning added a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw by producing a top toss of 44.45 meters (145 feet, 10 inches). Mader scored a sixth-place finish with best mark of 43.19 meters (141 feet, 8 inches). Mason Gakins earned eighth place with a top throw of 42.63 meters (139 feet, 10 inches).
 
Wabash will split its team next weekend with a portion of the Little Giant squad competing at the two-day Indiana Little State Championship Meet at Indiana Wesleyan University April 19 and 20. The remainder of the team will participate in the Rose-Hulman Twilight Invitational Friday evening in Terre Haute, Indiana.
