Tankers Take Down Titans In Friday Night Dual Meet

Wabash turned in 12 first-place finishes Friday night to cruise past Illinois Wesleyan by a score of 224-53 in a swimming and diving dual meet in Bloomington, Illinois.

Senior Hunter Jones set a new pool record with his time of 2:06.98 to win the 200-yard breaststroke. He also won the 100-yard breaststroke by finishing the race in 57.86. Jones joined with Marc Nicholson, Jacob Penrose, and Caleb McCarty to win the opening relay of the competition, the 200-yard medley relay, in 1:41.37.

Isaac Temores also won a pair of individual events for the Little Giants. He completed the 50-yard freestyle in 22.38. He also won the 100-yard butterfly by finishing in 53.91. Temores, Ryan Sacco, Anthony Mendez, and Nicholson combined to win the final event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 1:30.77.

Tanner Carver scored victories in both diving events. He won the one-meter competition with a total of 280.15 points. His score of 245.05 captured the individual title in the three-meter diving event.
Daren Gore produced the top time in the 200-yard freestyle by touching first in 1:47.94. Nicholson added a victory in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.52. Justin Dusza's time of 5:01.25 won the 500-yard freestyle race. Wesley Slaughter scored a top finish in the 100-yard freestyle by winning the race in 47.68.

"This was a very good meet from start to finish for our team, especially on the road," Wabash head coach Will Bernhardt said. "It's always difficult to have a lot of pop and power in our strokes in road dual meets. I was very pleased with how the guys responded to coming off a hard winter break training trip with their performances at Illinois Wesleyan. We're really in a good spot right now to approach the last dual meet of the regular season in two weeks and the conference championship meet in February. I was especially proud of Hunter Jones breaking the pool record. It's always fun to go to other teams' polls and get your name on their record board. It was a bit of a home crowd for him having grown up just down the road in Champaign, Illinois. He a lot of his family in the stands supporting him."

Wabash will compete at the University of Illinois-Chicago against both the Flames and the University of Chicago teams on Saturday, January 25.
