Wabash Sets New Team Mark With 1,264 Points For Third-Place Finish at NCAC Championships

Wabash scored a school-record 1,264 points to finish in third place at the 2020 North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The four-day meet held at Denison University concluded Saturday evening.

The Little Giants surpassed the 1,200-point mark for the first time in school history and became only the second team other than perennial powers Kenyon and Denison in NCAC history to score more than 1,200 in the men's championship team scoring. DePauw University scored 1,242.5 points at the 2014 championship meet. The highest total for any Wabash in previous meets was 1,154.5 points in 2018. The Little Giants also scored 1,103.5 points in their first NCAC championship meet in 2000.

"To say that I am proud of this team would be a giant understatement," Wabash head coach Will Bernhardt said. "What we have accomplished over the course of the four-day conference championship meet is truly inspiring. This team has faced some great adversities this year and to end it like this is amazing. If you would have asked me back in August if we would be able to score over 1200 points at the conference meet, I'm not sure I would have been able to say yes. To score the most points, the highest placing, winning a conference relay, and setting so many school records has been amazing. What is more impressive is the poise and class that our men showed throughout the meet. It's a long meet with a lot of ups and downs. It usually comes down to the team that handles them the best. This year I believe that was us.

"Every person on our squad had their hand in the outcome this weekend. Every member of the scoring team made their mark on the history books. It was a total team effort which makes this meet so special. I am so proud to be their coach and the effort that they have given this entire season. Our hard work has paid off!"

The Little Giants capped their record-setting effort with an all-conference performance in the meet's final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Caleb McCarty, Daren Glore, Jan Dziadek, and Wesley Slaughter combined to finish in third place with a time of 3:03.81

Dziadek earned an individual all-conference award with a third-place finish in the men's 100-yard individual medley. He finished with a season-best time of 50.72 in the finals to also break his own school record of 50.78 set one year ago. Tyler Richmond also qualified for the "A" final and finished eighth overall with a season-best time of 55.37. Marc Nicholson added an 11th-place finish in the "B" final with his best time of the season at 56.23.

Hunter Jones just missed a place on the all-conference team with his fourth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. The senior finished in 2:01.89 in the finals after swimming an NCAA "B" cut time of 2:01.84 in the prelims. Isaac Temores scored a 10th-place finish with a season-best time of 2:08.67.

Adam El-Khalili finished in 18:27.22 to earn a 19th-place finish.

Kevin Sheridan finished 14th in the "B" final of the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.89, his fastest time of the year. Richmond finished in 16th place by also swimming his best time of the season at 2:00.37. Anthony Mendez also turned his best effort of the season by completing the 200 fly in 2:00.52 in the prelims before scoring a 17th-place finish with a time of 2:01.94 in the finals. Ricky Damron finished 18th in the finals with a time of 2:02.25. His time of 2:02.06 in the morning prelims was his best of the season.
