Wabash College junior wrestler
Kyle Hatch and senior cross country and track and field runner
Sam Henthorn received the Pete Vaughan Award as the College's outstanding athletes of the year at Thursday evening's annual Awards Chapel.
Â
The award was established by the National Association of Wabash Men on January 17, 1948 in honor of Robert E. (Pete) Vaughan, thirty-one year coach and director of athletics at Wabash. A commemorative plaque hangs in Allen Athletics and Recreation Center.
Â
Hatch completed the 2019-2020 wrestling season with a 33-0 record competing at 165 pounds. The number-one ranked Division III wrestler in his weight class earned All-America honors for the third consecutive season after qualifying for the 2020 NCAA DIII Wrestling National Champion Tournament as the top seed in the 165-pound bracket. Hatch qualified for the national tournament after recording two pins and a major decision at the NCAA DIII Central Region Tournament in February. Hatch added individual titles at the Indiana Little State Tournament, the Concordia Open, and the John Summa Invitational.
Â
Henthorn was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year and added Indoor Track and Field Men's Distance Runner at the conference championship meet in February. He won the men's individual title at the 2019 NCAC Cross Country Championships in November to help Wabash finish second overall in the team standings. He became the second Wabash runner to win the NCAC title since the Little Giants joined the conference in 1999. Henthorn won both the men's 3,000- and 5,000-meter races at the indoor track and field conference championship meet. His efforts helped Wabash win the indoor title for the seventh time in 10 years.
