Jake Oostman scored 6,124 points in the decathlon to capture second place and earn All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors at the 2023 NCAC Combined Events Championship Sunday at Oberlin College.
Oostman entered Sunday's final day of competition with 3,519 points after the first five events of the decathlon. He scored 650 points in Sunday's first event, the 110-meter hurdles, by finishing in 16.76. Oostman picked up 614 points with a throw of 37.52 meters (123 feet, 1 inch) in the discus. He cleared a career-best height of 3.35 meters (10 feet, 11.75 inches) in the pole vault to add another 444 points. Oostman scored 534 points with a top throw of 46.33 meters (152 feet) in the javelin. He completed the decathlon with a 363-point effort in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in 5:37.59.
Giovonni Zappala placed fourth over in the final standings with 5,168 points. He started the day with 2,734 points, then added 696 points with a time of 16.33 in the 110-meter hurdles. Zappala scored 475 points in the discus throw with a career-best distance of 30.55 meters (100 feet, 3 inches). He cleared 2.85 meters (9 feet, 4.25 inches) in the pole vault to earn 321 points. Zappala's career-best throw of 45.98 meters (150 feet, 10 inches) in the javelin earned him another 529 points. He finished the 1,500-meter run in 5:27.28 to add 413 points and claim the fourth-place finish.
Landon Miller finished in eighth place in the decathlon standings with 4,706 points in his first decathlon. He tallied 419 points with his career-best time of 19.16 in the 110-meter hurdles. Miller's throw of 30.61 meters (100 feet, 5 inches) earned 476 points. He scored 231 points by clearing a career-best height of 2.45 meters (8 feet, 0.5 inches) in the pole vault. Miller turned in a career-best javelin throw of 30.83 meters (101 feet, 2 inches) to add another 311 points to his score. He scored 509 points by finishing the 1,500-meter run in a career-best 5:09.01.
All three Little Giants earned team points for Wabash toward the 2023 NCAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship Meet. Wabash finished the day with 14 points to lead the team standings. Denison's Jacob Brown won the decathlon and earned ten points for the Big Red. DePauw picked up six points and enters next weekend's remaining portion of the championship schedule in third place.
The remaining events of the 2023 championship meet take place May 5-6 at Ohio Wesleyan University.
