Wabash Captures Third Place At Inaugural Western Michigan Invitational

The Wabash College swimming and diving team picked up 28 top-ten finishes, including one individual championship, to capture third place at the inaugural Western Michigan Invitational. Saturday's final day of competition took place at Kalamazoo College after Friday evening's opening events were held at Hope College.
 
Wabash finished with 671 points to earn its third-place finish. Davenport University won the men's title with 1,110.5 points. Hope finished second with 1,021 points. Kalamazoo placed fourth overall with 328.5 points. The University of Olivet only competed on Saturday and scored 13 points to earn fifth place.
 
Freshman Ryan West captured the lone individual victory for the Little Giants by winning the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.44. Nicholas Plumb made it a 1-2 Wabash finish by capturing second place with a time of 1:57.89. Lucas Ferreira picked up a ninth-place finish by posting a time of 2:07.18. Barret Smith finished in 2:10.54 to earn a tenth-place finish.
 
West added a second-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley by posting a time of 4:15.36. Dane Market captured eighth place by finishing in 4:37.19. William Renie turned in a time of 4:42.74 to earn a tenth place.
 
Ethan Johns finished second overall in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall for the final time in 48.07.
 
Mason Gilliam placed third overall in the 1650 freestyle by compiling a time of 16:32.95. Xander Straw finished in 17:39.39 to earn eighth place.
 
Quinn Sweeney captured third place in the 200-yard freestyle by finishing in 1:44.28. Johns picked up sixth place with a time of 1:46.49. Gilliam swam to tenth place with a time of 1:50.28. Sweeney also scored a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.67. Plumb placed eighth overall by finishing in 2:05.75.
 
Brody Page placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly race by finishing at 53.22. Connor Craig scored a tenth-place finish with a time of 56.50.
 
Plumb earned a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.63. Page finished seventh with a time of 55.97, while Smith scored a ninth-place finish with a time of 56.82.
 
Market picked up a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.14. Justice Wenz placed ninth by finishing in 2:19.76.
 
Wabash divers scored fifth- and sixth-place finishes in one- and three-meter competitions Saturday. Keane Albright earned a fifth-place finish with a score of 178 on the one-meter board, and teammate Alexander Arruza placed sixth with a score of 166. Aruzza led the way with a fifth-place finish in the three-meter event with 159.75 points. Albright scored 146.80 points to earn sixth place.
 
The Little Giant quartet of Sweeney, Craig, Daniel Streeter, and Johns combined to finish fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:14.70. Wabash finished sixth in the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Plumb, Wenz, Page, and Johns combining for a time of 1:39.03.
 
Wabash hosts the annual Gail Moll Pebworth Invitational November 22-24 at the Crawfordsville High School Natatorium. Diving events occur on November 23 and 24 at the Class of 1950 Natatorium on the Wabash campus.
