Wabash Takes Runner-Up Honors at Indiana DIII Invitational

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — The Wabash College swimming and diving team made the most of its home waters Saturday at the Class of 1950 Natatorium, finishing second overall at the 2025 Indiana DIII Invitational. The Little Giants compiled 635 points behind team champion DePauw University (881.5) while producing a deep lineup of standout performances and 17 top-five finishes across 34 events.

Sophomore Ryan West and freshman Lew Sams led the way for Wabash, combining for four individual victories. West swept the backstroke events, winning the 200-yard backstroke in 1:56.63 and the 100 backstroke in 53.24. He added a third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley by touching the wall in 2:02.93. Sams dominated both breaststroke races, taking the 100 in 59.03 and the 200 in 2:10.69. Sams added a third-place finish in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 56.99. Both swimmers also contributed to top relay efforts.

Junior Quinn Sweeney added two more wins for the Little Giants, racing to first in the 100 butterfly (52.83) and 100 freestyle (48.47) while taking third in the 200 butterfly (2:03.22). Sophomore Mason Gilliam swept the distance events, winning the 1000 freestyle in 10:02.25 and the 500 freestyle in 4:52.01, while senior Xander Straw finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in those events.

Wabash opened the meet with a strong second-place showing in the 200 medley relay, as West, Sams, junior Brody Page, and freshman Nate Marshall clocked 1:37.06. The 400 freestyle relay of seniors John Allen and juniors Nicholas Plumb, Sweeney and William Renie finished third in 3:18.44 to close the meet on a high note.

Plumb added a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke (1:58.07) and a fourth-place showing in the 200 butterfly (2:03.30). Renie earned fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:50.12) and fifth in the 100 individual medley (58.11), while freshman Zach Baty took fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:51.56) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:06.05). Freshman Alijah Hall placed fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:04.43) and eighth in the 100 backstroke (57.46).

In addition to its individual depth, Wabash showed remarkable balance throughout the lineup, placing multiple swimmers in scoring positions in nearly every men's event. The Little Giants' consistency secured their runner-up team finish ahead of Rose-Hulman (597.5) and Franklin (413.5). Manchester, Anderson, and Hanover rounded out the standings.

Wabash competes against Rose-Hulman in the first dual meet of the season on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Class of 1950 Natatorium.
