Strong Opening Night Lifts Wabash to Runner-Up Finish at Larry Cole Opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Wabash College men's indoor track and field team opened the 2026 season with a strong showing Friday night, placing second overall at the Larry Cole Opener hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
 
Wabash totaled 149 points to finish just six points behind host Rose-Hulman, which won the team title with 155 points. DePauw placed third with 138 points, followed by Franklin (44), Anderson (32), Oakland City (18) and Georgetown (Ky.) (1).
 
The Little Giants picked up multiple event victories and top-five finishes across the sprints, middle distance events, relays and field events.
 
Wabash's throwers delivered key points in the field events. Senior Evan Furuness won the shot put with a career-best throw of 16.00 meters, while senior Quinn Sholar finished second at 15.01 meters. Sholar also captured the weight throw title with a mark of 16.88 meters. Furuness placed fourth in the weight throw another career-best mark of 15.71 meters, and senior Lane Brockman rounded out the top five with a fifth-place effort of 15.20 meters.
 
Senior Conner Grimes captured the 60-meter dash title with a winning time of 7.08 seconds and added a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters at 23.15 seconds. Freshman Brock DeBello claimed first place in the 400 meters, crossing the line in 49.47 seconds.
 
Wabash dominated the 800 meters, sweeping the top four spots. Junior David Adesanya won the race in 1:56.69, edging senior Haiden Diemer-McKinney, who finished second in 1:56.76. Sophomore Sawyer Lewis placed third at 2:02.43, followed by freshman Kaiden McGuire in fourth with a time of 2:03.96.
 
In the distance events, freshman Tyler Kerzee finished second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:58.93, while sophomore Johnathan Loney added a fifth-place finish in 9:11.81.
 
The Little Giants also earned a relay victory as the 4x400-meter relay team of DeBello, Adesanya, Kaiden McGuire, and Lewis won in 3:29.47.
 
In the pole vault, sophomore Hugh Ford finished second by clearing 4.10 meters, with freshman Tyler Petroski placing fourth at 4.00 meters and senior Nate Joven fifth at 3.90 meters. Freshman Colson Mendenhall added a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.05 meters.
 
The Little Giants will compete at the Mount St. Joseph University MoJoe Invitational on Saturday, January 24.
