CINCINNATI, Ohio — Powered by six individual victories and 19 top-five finishes, the Wabash College indoor track and field team claimed the team title Saturday at the MoJoe Invitational hosted by Mount St. Joseph University. The Little Giants totaled 168 points to edge Northern Kentucky (153), with Wilmington (Ohio) (104), Pikeville (61), and Mount St. Joseph (60) completing the team scoring.
The Little Giants recorded wins in sprint, distance, relay, and throwing events while consistently placing multiple athletes among the top five in nearly every event contested.
Senior
Haiden Diemer-McKinney led the distance group with a victory in the mile, crossing the line in 4:20.31 seconds. Junior
Angel Perez added a third-place finish in 4:37.70.
The sprint events provided a significant share of points. Freshman
Brock DeBello won the 200 meters in a season-best time of 23.12, while junior
Owen Smith placed fourth in 23.94. In the 60 meters, senior
Sly Williams finished second in 7.10 seconds, followed by junior
Conner Grimes in fifth place at 7.19.
Wabash also captured a relay victory, winning the 4x200 with the team of
Carter Leininger, DeBello,
Tanner Brooks, and Grimes posting a time of 1:33.38.
In the 400 meters, freshman
William Shearer earned a runner-up finish in 51.35 seconds in his first collegiate race. Sophomore
Sawyer Lewis followed closely in third place with a season-best time of 52.70.
The Little Giants dominated the field events behind standout performances from their senior throwers.
Quinn Sholar swept his events, winning the shot put with a mark of 15.72 meters (51 feet, 7 inches) and the weight throw at 17.35 meters (56-11.25). Senior
Evan Furuness placed fourth in the shot put (15.21m; 49 feet, 11 inches), while sophomore
Jakob Van Pelt finished fifth in the shot (13.86 m; 45 feet, 5.75 inches).
In the horizontal and vertical jumps, Williams claimed the long jump title with a leap of 6.60 meters (21-8). Sophomore
Morgyn Clark earned a third-place finish in the high jump by clearing 1.85 meters (6-0.75). The pole vault produced three top-four finishes for Wabash, led by sophomore
Hugh Ford, who finished second at 4.25 meters (13-11.25). Freshman
Colson Mendenhall recorded a career-best effort to place third (3.65m; 11-11.75), and senior
Nate Joven finished fourth (3.80m; 12-5.5).
Additional scoring performances included freshman
Alec Saidian finishing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 8.98 seconds.
Wabash will compete at the Steemer Showcase hosted by Wittenberg University next Saturday.
