SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —
Brock DeBello rewrote the Wabash College record book and the Little Giants produced multiple top-five finishes Saturday while placing sixth out of 22 teams at the Steemer Showcase hosted by Wittenberg University.
Wabash totaled 42 points to finish just behind Malone (44) and ahead of Manchester (40) in a deep, regionally strong field. Cedarville won the team title with 109 points, followed by host Wittenberg (66.75), Indianapolis (50), Wright State (46.75), and Malone.
The headline performance for the Little Giants came in the 400 meters, where freshman
Brock DeBello finished fourth overall in 48.79 seconds. The time shattered the previous Wabash indoor record of 49.08, set by John Haley in 2012, and continued DeBello's strong form following his recent North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Sprints/Hurdles Athlete of the Week honor.
Wabash collected a pair of podium finishes on the track.
Haiden Diemer-McKinney placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.89, while
David Adesanya followed closely in fifth place at 1:55.05. The Little Giants also turned in a runner-up effort in the 4x400-meter relay as the quartet of DeBello,
Owen Smith, Adesanya, and Diemer-McKinney finished second in 3:22.24 to add eight team points.
In the field events, Wabash accounted for several key scoring performances.
Sly Williams placed fourth in the triple jump with a top mark of 13.88 meters (45 feet, 6.5 inches).
Quinn Sholar delivered a pair of top-six finishes in the throws, finishing fourth in the shot put at 14.98 meters (49-1.75).
The Little Giants continue their indoor season with upcoming meets at Illinois Wesleyan University next weekend.
