West Breaks School Records as Wabash Holds Fifth at NCAC Championships

GRANVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Sophomore Ryan West delivered two record-setting performances Thursday night to lead Wabash College on day two of the 2026 North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Trumbull Aquatics Center on the campus of Denison University.

West broke the school record in the 200-yard individual medley and added another program mark as part of the 400-yard medley relay to help the Little Giants remain fifth in the team standings after 14 events.

West produced Wabash's top individual finish of the evening by placing seventh in the 200 IM with a finals time of 1:50.87. The mark shattered the previous school record of 1:52.02 set by Jan Dziadek in 2019 and earned 26 team points.

Freshman Lew Sams added seven points in the same event with a 21st-place finish in 1:58.15.

West returned later in the session to lead off Wabash's 400 medley relay with a record-breaking split in the 100 backstroke. He touched in 49.51 seconds, eclipsing the former school record of 50.02 set by Dziadek in 2020. West teamed with freshmen Abbas Hakim and Owen Thomas and junior Quinn Sweeney to post a time of 3:25.13. The quartet finished seventh to score 52 points, Wabash's highest-scoring effort of the night in a single event.

In the 500 freestyle, sophomore Mason Gilliam recorded a ninth-place finish in 4:36.75 to collect 24 points. Junior Will Renie followed with a 17th-place finish in a personal-best 4:45.23 to earn 13 points. Freshman Carter Ramsey added five points with a personal-best 4:48.53 for 23rd place, while freshman Aidan Gubbins scored one point with a personal-best 4:56.66 to finish 27th.

Sweeney capped his evening with an 18th-place finish in the 50 freestyle, touching in 21.39 seconds to add 12 points.

Through 14 events, Wabash has totaled 318 points and sits fifth in the nine-team field. Denison leads with 708.5 points, followed by Kenyon College (597.5), John Carroll University (360) and DePauw University (350). Wabash stands ahead of Oberlin College (260), the College of Wooster (249), Ohio Wesleyan University (179) and Wittenberg University (97).

The championships continue through Saturday. Friday's preliminaries begin at 9:30 a.m., with finals scheduled for 6 p.m.
