GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Junior
Conner Grimes broke two school sprint records and senior
Quinn Sholar shattered a long-standing mark in the shot put to power Wabash College to the team championship Saturday at the DePauw Indoor Invitational.
Grimes set new Wabash standards in the 60-meter dash (6.91 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (21.90), while Sholar eclipsed the program record in the shot put with a throw of 17.47 meters as the Little Giants totaled 211.5 points to finish first in the 12-team field. Host DePauw University placed second with 104 points.
Grimes opened his day with a 6.95-second effort in the 60-meter preliminaries before clocking 6.91 in the finals to place second overall and surpass the previous school record of 6.92 set by Will Newby in 2022. He returned to the track to win the 200 meters in 21.90, breaking the former mark of 22.33 held by Jose Franco since 2022.
Sholar delivered his record in dominant fashion, winning the shot put with a 17.47-meter throw to better Derek De St. Jean's 2015 school record of 16.17 meters. He added a runner-up finish in the weight throw at 17.35 meters.
Wabash added four more event victories. Freshman
Brock DeBello captured the 400-meter dash in 50.19 seconds. In the 800 meters,
David Adesanya led a 1-2 finish with a winning time of 1:56.34, followed by
Sawyer Lewis in 1:58.58.
Sam Carpenter finished seventh in 2:00.99.
Senior
Haiden Diemer-McKinney won the 1,000 meters in 2:30.16, with
Angel Perez second (2:40.37),
Tyler Kerzee third (2:41.00) and
Johnathan Loney seventh (2:47.09). Wabash also claimed the distance medley relay title, as Adesanya,
Owen Smith, Diemer-McKinney and
Sam Vaught combined to run 10:57.02.
In the mile, Vaught placed second in 4:24.45, Perez finished fifth in 4:25.34 and Carpenter took sixth in 4:26.57. Kerzee (16:01.10) and Loney (16:01.86) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 5,000 meters.
The Little Giants' 4x400 relay team of
Kaiden McGuire, Morgyn Clack, Lewis, and DeBello placed second in 3:29.61, while the 4x200 relay quartet of Grimes, Shearer,
Tanner Brooks and
Carter Leininger finished fifth in 1:33.88.
Sly Williams won the long jump with a mark of 6.66 meters and finished second in the triple jump at 13.23 meters.
Mike Holsclaw added a seventh-place effort in the long jump (5.85m) and a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (12.55m).
In the pole vault,
Colson Mendenhall cleared 4.25 meters to take third,
Hugh Ford finished fourth at 4.10 meters, and
Nate Joven tied for fifth at the same height. Clark tied for second in the high jump at 1.83 meters, with
Kannon Chase tying for fourth at 1.83.
Evan Furuness placed third in the shot put at 14.81 meters and added an eighth-place finish in the weight throw at 15.43 meters.
Lane Brockman finished fifth in the weight throw at 16.10 meters.
John Huisden scored with a seventh-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.97), and
Noah Villalon added a sixth-place run in the 600 meters (1:33.88).
