BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — A select group of Wabash College track and field athletes closed out the regular season Friday night with several personal-best efforts at a non-scoring Illinois Wesleyan Tri-Meet inside the Shirk Center.
In the final competition before next weekend's North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Wittenberg University, the Little Giants used the meet as a final sharpening opportunity rather than a team-scoring event.
Tanner Brooks advanced to the finals of the 60-meter dash after running 7.27 seconds in the preliminaries to qualify eighth overall. He returned to the track later in the evening to post a time of 7.29 seconds in the final, again finishing eighth.
The 60-meter hurdles featured a strong showing from Wabash's underclassmen. Sophomore John Huisden qualified fifth in the preliminaries with a time of 9.20 seconds before improving to 8.99 seconds in the final to place fourth overall. Alec Saidian also moved on from the prelims, clocking 9.86 seconds to qualify seventh. He delivered a significant drop in the final, finishing fifth with a time of 9.06 seconds.
Sophomore Carter Leininger recorded a third-place finish in the 200 meters, crossing the line in 22.97 seconds (22.965) out of the fifth heat. The mark represented a season best for Leininger as he continued to round into form heading into the conference meet.
In the throwing events, Wabash produced two personal records and one season-best mark in the weight throw. Jordan Tate finished fourth with a personal-record toss of 15.30 meters (50 feet, 2 1/2 inches). Jakob Van Pelt added a personal-best throw of 14.50 meters (47-7) to place sixth, while Jacob Guse earned fifth place with a season-best mark of 14.54 meters (47-8 1/2).
