TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Wabash College track and field team opened its outdoor season Saturday at the Rose-Hulman Early Bird Meet, placing third out of eight teams with 105.5 points. The Little Giants finished ahead of Concordia (Wis.) and Franklin. Rose-Hulman won the team title with 202 points, followed by DePauw with 111.
Wabash recorded 14 top-eight finishes across the meet, highlighted by strong performances in both field and track events.
In the field events, Colson Mendenhall led the way with a second-place finish in the long jump at 6.28 meters (20 feet, 7.25 inches), while Kannon Chase added a fourth-place mark of 6.22 meters (20 feet, 5 inches) in the same event. Mendenhall also earned a runner-up finish in the pole vault, clearing 3.90 meters (12 feet, 9.5 inches), with Nate Joven placing third at 3.75 meters (12 feet, 3.5 inches).
In the high jump, Chase secured another second-place finish by clearing 1.83 meters (6 feet), while Morgyn Clark followed with a third-place effort at 1.78 meters (5 feet, 10 inches).
The throwing events were highlighted by Lane Brockman, who placed third in the hammer throw with a distance of 48.56 meters (159 feet, 4 inches). Will Boas added a fourth-place finish at 47.08 meters (154 feet, 5 inches), while Evan Furuness recorded a throw of 45.68 meters (149 feet, 10 inches) to finish fifth. Solomon Massela also contributed a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 13.28 meters (43 feet, 7 inches).
On the track, Tyler Kerzee posted a fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:06.18, while Sawyer Lewis finished fourth in the 800-meter run at 2:00.19. Ricky Sanders placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.87, followed by John Huisden in fifth at 59.31. Alec Saidian added a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 16.56.
The Little Giants return to action next weekend at a two-day meet hosted by Emory University in Atlanta, scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
