ATLANTA, Ga. — Fresh off All-America performances at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, Brock DeBello and Quinn Sholar continued their record-setting momentum outdoors, leading Wabash College to a series of standout performances at the non-scored Thrills in the Hills Meet hosted by Emory University on Friday and Saturday.
DeBello, a freshman, delivered the headline performance of the weekend by breaking a 12-year-old school record in the 400-meter dash. He won the event in 46.95 seconds, producing the second-fastest time in Division III this season. DeBello eclipsed the previous Wabash record of 47.99 set by John Haley in 2013 by more than a full second.
Sholar, a senior, matched that standard in the field events. He shattered the Wabash shot put record with a winning mark of 17.84 meters (58 feet, 6.50 inches), surpassing the previous record of 16.24 meters (53 feet, 3.50 inches) set by Derek De St. Jean in 2014. The throw ranks at the top of the early Division III outdoor performance list.
Sholar added a runner-up finish in the discus with a toss of 46.52 meters (152 feet, 7 inches) and placed sixth in the hammer throw at 50.83 meters (166 feet, 9 inches), completing a dominant all-around weekend. Teammate Evan Furuness contributed depth in the throws, finishing eighth in both the shot put (13.93 meters / 45 feet, 8.50 inches) and discus (43.24 meters / 141 feet, 10 inches). Solomon Massela (13.65 meters) and Jakob Van Pelt (42.61 meters) added ninth-place finishes in the shot put and discus, respectively.
On the track, Sam Vaught claimed a decisive victory in the 3,000-meter run, crossing the line in 8:57.51 to finish 40 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Thomas Price placed third in 9:37.07, while Alex Orihuela followed in fourth at 9:50.10. Jack Loftus added a 10th-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:20.43.
Sly Williams delivered another top performance in the jumps, finishing second in the long jump with a leap of 6.97 meters (22 feet, 10.50 inches), a mark tied for ninth on the national list. Cole Mendenhall added a seventh-place finish at 6.55 meters (21 feet, 6 inches).
David Adesanya recorded a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.41.
In the hammer throw, Lane Brockman led Wabash with a fifth-place effort of 51.60 meters (169 feet, 3 inches), followed by Sholar in sixth and Will Boas in 10th at 47.79 meters (156 feet, 9 inches). Ricardo Juarez placed ninth in the javelin with a throw of 45.24 meters (148 feet, 5 inches).
Wabash will host the annual Hunstman Family Track and Field Invitational next Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m.
