Late Rally Falls Short for Wabash in 2-1 Soccer Loss

Box Score Femi Oluyedun scored a goal for the Little Giants with less than five minutes remaining in Wednesday night's match against sixth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan, but a final flurry of offensive attacks came up short in a 2-1 Wabash loss.

Oluyedun got a break-away opportunity and outraced the Ohio Wesleyan defenders on his way to the goal. He chipped the ball over the Bishops' goalkeeper for his second goal of the season to trim the lead to one goal. Minutes earlier senior Dylan Andrew had a scoring chance blocked away by the OWU goalkeeper. Andrew had another shot attempt in the first period, as did Josh Pedersen.

Box Score

Despite being out shot 26-8 and a difference of 14-4 in shots on goal in favor of the visitors, Wabash played the match close with the nationally-ranked and North Coast Athletic Conference leaders all night long. OWU (12-1-0, 4-0-0 NCAC) got its first goal less than two minutes into the contest on a penalty kick by Dylan Stone. An unassisted goal by Tyler Bryant in the 37th minute would prove to be the game winner.

"You expect a high number of shots from a team like Ohio Wesleyan," Wabash head coach Roberto Giannini said. "They fired a lot shots from 25 or 30 yards away, and most of the shots with the exception of one ended in saves by our goalkeeper, Matt Paul. We knew that would be their plan. Right now they are the better team. They move the ball around well and they are very athletic, and there is a reason they are always very highly ranked nationally.

"That being said, they scored two goals on two very foolish mistakes on our part. It's difficult to go down 1-0 because of a foul in our own box that creates a penalty kick by a team such as Ohio Wesleyan. Nevertheless , we did create some chances in the first half, even before they scored their second goal with another mistake on bad pass behind one of our players that their attacker took away and went one-versus-one with our keeper. We really gave them two goals. Even though they outshot us, we were able to play an equal match. We made some good attacks and created some chances to attack the goal. We really went into attack mode in the closing minutes of the match. So I'm very proud of the way we came back in the second half and the way we matched up with the sixth-ranked team in the country. Unfortunately two mistakes cost us a one goal loss. But we know if we play the way we did tonight, particularly in the second half, we have a great chance to win not only Saturday, but against any opponent we play the rest of the season."

Paul finished with a career-high 12 saves in goal for the Little Giants.

Wabash (6-6-2, 1-3-0 NCAC) returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. at home against NCAC foe Denison University.
