Tourney Hopes Dim in 1-0 Loss to Witt

CJ Francoeur and the rest of his Wabash teammates still have a slim chance of making their first NCAC Men's Soccer Tournament.
Box Score
Wabash went from controlling its own destiny to sitting on the outside of the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament. A 1-0 home loss to Wittenberg Wednesday night ended any chance of the Little Giants grabbing the final slot in the tournament.

Wittenberg's Joe Halula launched a chip over the top of the Wabash defense in the sixth minute of the match that slammed into the upper-right corner of the goal to put the Tigers up early in the contest. Wabash would mount several scoring chances, particularly in the final 20 minutes of the match, but were unable to find the equalizing goal to keep their post-season hopes alive.

"Obviously we're very disappointed," Wabash head coach Roberto Giannini said. "To be honest, Wittenberg came out from the start and played more like the team that had their season on the line. We came out flat and did not have a good energy level. We made one mistake and Wittenberg took advantage and chipped the ball over our keeper.

"We played with more energy in the second half. We had a couple of really good chances that their goalkeeper saved. But we started rushing things late in the match. This hurts tremendously, but we have no right to cry about the result because we didn't perform as well as we should have to have a chance to beat Wittenberg."

The Little Giants have a match left to play at Kenyon, but will need help to still have any chance to earn one of the four spots in the upcoming NCAC tourney. Wabash needs Kenyon to lose both Wednesday night to nationally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan and to the Little Giants on Saturday, and for Hiram to defeat Denison Saturday but lose to Wooster Wednesday night. Any other combination among those teams eliminates Wabash from contention for a tournament berth.

Wabash (8-8-2, 3-5 NCAC) outshot Wittenberg 11-8 overall, including a 7-0 edge for total shots in the second period. Both teams fired four shots on net. Matt Paul finished with two saves. Allan Swan had two shots on goal in the final home match of his career. Levi Noblitt and senior Austin Jennings each had a shot on goal.
