Jennings had already provided plenty of fireworks for the Little Giants earlier in the match. With Wabash trailing 1-0 at halftime, the freshman scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 53rd minute to draw the match even at 1-1. Swan and freshman
Kyle Gooding provided the passes that set up the Jennings goal. However, Capital answered with a goal eight minutes later for a 2-1 lead.
Wabash then exploded for two goals in the span of 14 seconds.
Blake's older brother, senior
Austin Jennings, took a pass from Gooding in front of the net and blasted a shot home to tie the match at 2-2. Capital turned the ball over immediately after the next kickoff and the Little Giants countered quickly.
Phil Rosborough dropped a pass to the right side to
Tommy Pecar, who followed with a centering pass off the left side of the box to
Blake Jennings. The freshman took a step toward the keeper before making a soft touch beyond his outstretched arms Jennings' second goal of the match and a 3-2 Wabash lead.
The Crusaders were not done. A corner kick taken by Capital was knocked away by Wabash goalkeeper
Matt Paul, but R.G. Florey stepped in and took the rebound shot for a game-tying goal with less than nine minutes left in regulation. The match finished in a 3-3 tie after 90 minutes before Wabash took the kickoff in the extra session and immediately went on the attack for the Swan goal.
The two goals marked the first time in the Wabash freshman's career he has scored multiple goals in a match. He finished the day with a total of five points. Blake leads the Little Giant team with five goals this season.
The Little Giants outshot Capital 22-14 with nine shots on goal compared to six for the Crusaders. Paul finished the match with three saves.
"We will definitely take the win," head coach Roberto Giannini said. "We had some problems in the back today that led to three goals for Capital, but we finally were able to finish some shots with goals. It's good for the morale of this team and good for the stats. Capital is a good team, but we really didn't show up early in the match. They won most of the 50-50 balls and just seemed more athletic than we were. We gave a little too much space today. Our defense all the way around, not just the defenders but everyone on the field, gave too much space. When that happens, it creates problems for the players in the back."
Wabash (6-4-2, 1-1-0 NCAC) returns to North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday with a match against Allegheny College. The start is set for noon. Little Giant fans will honor the senior members of the team prior to the start of the match.
