Box Score Two Denison goals in the span of ten minutes ended with Wabash losing 2-1 to the Big Red in overtime in an important North Coast Athletic Conference soccer match.
Wabash held a 1-0 lead heading into the final three minutes of the match after
Jacob Nigh scored his third goal of the season. Nigh collected a pass from
Ben Sia and drilled the shot attempt into the net in the 40th minute to give the Little Giants the first half lead.
Denison (7-5-2, 3-2-1 NCAC) tied the match in the 88th minute when John Krentz sent the rebound off a series of blocked shot attempt for his first goal of the year.
The Big Red added the game winner seven minutes into the first overtime period. Bob Cassarona drilled a near-perfect shot from 25 yards away from the goal to end the match.
The loss kept Wabash in eighth in the conference standings. Wabash would have been one of five NCAC teams with two league victories if the Little Giants could have held on for the victory.
“We came into Denison --- a very hard place to play --- with a specific game plan,” Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. “We executed that plan for most of the game. We defended well throughout the match, particularly with
Steve Magura moving to the back line.
Jacob Nigh moved to the outside swing up top. That move worked out really well when Nigh scored that first goal.
“We had some more opportunities to counter attack in the second half, but we weren't able to add another goal and get a cushion. Denison's game-tying goal really wasn't any kind of mental mistake on our part. We had blocked a couple of shots off the corner kick when Denison found a way to put the ball in the net.”
Wabash fired two shot attempts in the extra period but could not score before the Big Red won on their only try of the period.
“We were all over them in overtime. Their player hit a laser shot from a long way out for the game winner. There was nothing
Matt Paul could have done to stop it. I don't think any goalie in the country could have stopped it.
"This loss is really frustrating. The game of soccer isn't decided on which team played the best or executed its game plan. The winner is the team that puts the ball in the net the most times.
Wabash (3-11, 1-4 NCAC) returns home to Mud Hollow Stadium to play arch-rival DePauw University Wednesday at 4 p.m.
