Box Score For the fifth time this season and second time in as many matches, an overtime goal overshadowed a strong performance by the Wabash soccer team. Wednesday night it was the Little Giants' archrival — the DePauw Tigers — that scored in the extra session to claim a 2-1 victory.
DePauw's Alieu Musa collected a rebound off a shot in the 95th minute and nudged the ball into the net for the game winner.
The Tigers (10-1-4, 4-1-2 NCAC) took the early lead on a goal by Nick Williams in the 18th minute of the first half. DePauw controlled the early pace of the game before Wabash adjusted and took the momentum.
The Little Giants kept their attack up in th second half, evening the score in the 51st minute. Zack Woloshin beat the DePauw defender in the left corner and fired a pass to right side of the box where
Blake Jennings drilled his fourth goal of the season to even the score at 1-1.
"We made some adjustments early in the match after DePauw scored," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "Once we made those changes, I really thought we outplayed DePauw from that point forward. This may be the best we've played all season as a team."
The numbers back up Keller's statement. Wabash forced Tiger goalkeeper Tony Halteman to make five saves, including three in the second half. DePauw outshot Wabash 15-12 overall, but the Tigers took the first eight shots of the match in the opening 28 minutes of play. From the point forward, the Little Giants owned a 12-7 edge in total shots and and a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Jennings nearly tied the match in the first period when he launched a rocket from in front of the net on a rebound attempt that sailed high over the goal.
Braden Burkett also fired a shot that just missed going into the net in the second half.
Matt Paul recorded three saves in the contest.
Wabash (3-12, 1-5 NCAC) led Denison on Saturday heading into the 87th minute when the Big Red tied the match at 1-1 before taking a 2-1 overtime victory. The Little Giants have also lost in overtime to nationally-ranked Hope College (2-1), Rose-Hulman (1-0), and Oberlin (3-2).
