The Little Giants fell behind early, surrendering two goals in the first eight minutes of the match. Nick Little scored both times off set pieces from Nico Gercke and Stroup to put the NCAA Divison II Mighty Oaks (3-1) up 2-0.
"We dug a hole early and came out flat today," Wabash Head Coach
Chris Keller said. "It cost us in the long run because we had to play the rest of the match chasing their early goals. At the collegiate level you just can't fall behind by two goals that quickly because teams will find a way to punish you."
The Little Giants started to chase their way back into the contest after a high tackle in the 28th minute took sophomore defender
George Vinihakis out of the match with a lower leg injury. A red card issued to Oakland City's Ben Hosie on the play put Wabash in a man advantage for the remainder of the match. The Little Giants used the opportunity in the 44th minute when House secured a loose ball of a shot by Jennings and drilled it into the back of the net to cut the lead to one goal.
Wabash had several opportunities in both halves. The Little Giants blasted shot after shot toward starting goalkeeper Byron Baamonde and backup Auston Bruder. Baamonde made two high saves on Wabash shots in the first half. Bruder did not have a save but faced four overall shots. The Little Giants finished with a one-shot advantage in the final statistics, 12-11, with one shot glancing off the cross bar in the second half.
Jennings scored the final goal of the match on a penalty kick with 20 seconds left in the contest.
Paul recorded four saves, including a diving stop on the shot by Sascha Schmidt that led to the Stroup game-winning goal.
"We're trying to mesh together offensively with all these new guys on the squad and with the different formations we are running," Keller said. "We had a couple of good things offensively. We got the ball in the box a lot. We were just a bit unlucky on a couple of attempts and their goalie had some good saves. I'm happy with the amount of attack we had the number of shots on goal which has gone up every game."
Wabash (2-4) will return to action Saturday for a 2 p.m. home match against the University of Chicago.
