Box Score Ben Sia gave Wabash an early lead with his first goal of the season, but two second-half Hanover goals gave the Panthers a 2-1 victory Wednesday night in southern Indiana.
Sia collected a loose ball in front of the net that glanced off a Hanover player's head and sent the ball into the net in the 12th minute to put the Little Giants up 1-0.
Hanover scored its first goal in the 54th minute when the Little Giants committed a foul inside the box to give the Panthers a penalty kick. Ryan Moriarty slipped the shot past Wabash goalkeeper
Matt Paul to tie the match at 1-1.
The Panthers(3-3-2) took the lead in the 76th minute off a header by Carson Reynolds from the crossing pass by Bob Waldren.
"We just lost our focus and intensity after the penalty kick," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We got out to such a good start and got an early goal from Ben to lead at halftime. We got a little lost facing Hanover's attack and committed the foul that gave them the PK. After that we just could not get anything developed and it led to a second goal for Hanover."
Sia led the Little Giants with two shots on goal.
Steve Magura added a shot on goal, as did
Blake Jennings. Paul made one save out of the three shots he faced.
"We continue to do a lot of good things in our matches," Keller said. "The good news is now we get learn from our mistakes as we get set for conference play. The North Coast Athletic Conference is a strong as it's ever been, Even so, there is no reason we can't make the conference tournament if we just play smart soccer and execute our game plan."
Wabash (2-6) returns to action Saturday at 4:30 p.m. with its conference-opening match against Oberlin College.
