Box Score Two hours after the Wabash football team lost in overtime, an extra session dampened an otherwise stellar performance by the Little Giant soccer team in a 3-2 loss to Oberlin.
Wabash led twice in the opening North Coast Athletic Conference contest for both team, only to see the Yeomen (6-2, 1-0 NCAC) score equalizers before adding the game-winning goal in the 95th minute.
Zach Woloshin returned from an injury to tally his first goal of the season in the seventh minute off a pass from
Ethan Dove. Oberlin tied the match late in the first half, but the Little Giants answered in the opening minutes of the second period.
Steve Magura stepped in front a pass and found Woloshin down the left side. A centering pass hit
Adam Antalis perfectly. The freshman drilled a shot into the net for his second goal of the season and a 2-1 Wabash lead.
"It was a very good game," Wabash coach
Chris Keller said. "The guys played well. I thought we had such a good start to both halves. This is another really tough loss for a team that's working hard to play well. The second goal was really good play with a couple of connected passes for a ball out wide and a cross to the box for the finish. It was a high-level goal."
The Yeomen tied the game at 2-2 with a goal in the 68th minute before Matt Capozzi gathered a pass from Ed Vitoria on the right side of box and scored the overtime winner.
"The turning point in this match came with 25 minutes left in regulation," Keller said. "
Levi Noblitt was playing a tremendous game in the middle for us, but went down with an injury, along with an injury to
Adam Antalis. We kind of lost the midfield when that happened. Oberlin took advantage and scored a couple of really good goals. Props to them — they had a really good game. We're just going to keep working."
Matt Paul made several spectacular saves, finishing with seven rejections in 10 shots on goal by Oberlin. The Little Giants tested Oberlin goalkeeper Brandt Rentel five times with two goals. Woloshin put two shots on net, while
Ben Sia and Antalis managed the remaing shots on goal.
Wabash (2-7, 0-1 NCAC) returns to action Wednesday with a non-conference match at Capital.
