Early Goals Give Wabash a 2-0 Win at Earlham

Box Score Blake Jennings and Steve Magura tallied goals in the opening minutes of each half to give the Little Giant soccer team a 2-0 win Sunday afternoon at Earlham College.

Wabash peppered the Earlham goalkeepers with a total of 13 shots, including five shots on goal.

"We really tried to work the ball wide to advance our attack," Head Coach Chris Keller said. "We played with two forwards today. I thought that worked well good. We had some good combinations and really created havoc in the box when we played the ball over Earlham's defenders."

An early Wabash attack led to a red card and an unfortunate injury for Earlham (2-2) starting goalkeeper Sam Embry. Ben Sia slipped past the defense and played a ball past Embry for an open look at the goal. In attempt to prevent Sia from picking up the early goal, Embry collided with the Wabash player to draw the automatic red card. Embry suffered a leg injury and was replaced by Chris Marshall in goal.

The Little Giants tested Marshall early. Two minutes after his entry into the match, Magura lifted a pass to Jennings who drilled the shot into the net for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 Wabash lead.

Eight minutes into the final period Magura added his second goal of the year, collecting a pass from George Vinihakis for the assist on the play.

The Little Giants won their second match of the season by posting their second shutout, moving the overall record to 2-3 for the year. Matt Paul turned aside three shots on goal by the Quakers. Earlham managed only five shots in the contest.

"It's great to know you have a solid back line, but our defense really starts up the field with our first position player," Keller said. "We have been defending as a unit. Our front players and midfielders challenge counterattacks and our back line and Matt have been solid all season long. That's why we've been so successful in terms of keeping matches close through the first two weeks of the season."

For the second weekend in a row the Little Giants rallied for a Sunday victory after losing a tough overtime match on Saturday. Wabash dropped a 2-1 overtime decision last Saturday before picking up a 3-0 win over Monmouth on Sunday. Yesterday the Little Giants lost 1-0 in overtime at Rose-Hulman.

"I think our ability to rebound quickly from emotional losses is a good sign of team chemistry and desire," Keller said. "We've shown a will to come back and win by facing adversity. Now we could use some win streaks, but overall we would like to try to hit our stride and peak heading into conference play."

Wabash returns to Mud Hollow Stadium for a Wednesday match against Oakland City University at 5:30 p.m.
