Box Score Wabash traveled to northeast Ohio Saturday to face an Oberlin College soccer team that enterd the match unbeaten in its last seven matches. The Yeomen stretched the streak to seven with a 4-0 victory over the visiting Little Giants.
Wabash played the North Coast Athletic Conference matchup against the Yeomen as part of the Little Giants' sixth straight road contest over the last month.
Oberlin (8-1-2) opened the scoring with a goal by John Ingham in the tenth minute. The Yeomen added a second goal by Sam Winward off an assist by Ingham at the 16:35 mark of the first half.
Two second-half goals — one by Nick Wertman at 56:15 and another by Dyaln Tencic in the final four minutes of the match — secured the win for Oberlin.
"We played decently in the first half," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "Unfortunately we lost freshman
Geno James to an ankle injury in the third minute. That changed our setup at center midfield. Oberlin took advantage with a goal off a free kick and a second on a good counter to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Then
Steve Magura went down with an injury that even us with an even shorter bench, since we were also missing
Zach Woloshin in the lineup. We tried to press forward in the second half, but it created two more opportunities for Oberlin.
"Again, we played decent, but in this conference you can't just play decent, especially on the road, and expect to come away with a favorable result. I give a lot of credit to Oberlin too, They were one of the best teams we've played all year. Now we're excited to get back home and try to get everyone back healthy."
The Little Giants finished with five total shots and two shots on goal compared to 13 and 7 for the Yeomen. Magura had one shot on goal before leaving the contest.
Riley Pelton added the other.
Dayton Jennings recorded four saves in the loss.
Wabash (2-7-1) return home for the first time since September 8 with a conference match against Allegheny College Saturday, October 12 at 11 a.m. at Mud Hollow Field.
