Geno James scored his first career goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation of Wednesday night's soccer match at Franklin. However, the Grizzlies picked up a sudden-victory goal in overtime to defeat Wabash 3-2 in non-conference action.
Wabash forced overtime when James found the back of the net with 1:20 remaining in the match of a pass from fellow first-year player
Riley Pelton.
The Little Giants owned a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to the first goal of the season by junior
Steve Magura in the 18th minute.
Blake Jennings picked up the assist on the goal off a restart on a throw in for Wabash. Franklin notched the game-tying goal in the 73rd minute off a shot by Antonio Gioe that got past Little Giant goalkeeper
Dayton Jennings. The Grizzlies took the lead 3-1/2 minutes later when William Hilgendorf scored.
Franklin (1-3-1) tallied the game-winner 4:38 into the extra session off Gloe's second goal of the match.
"Overall we played a really good game," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We went up 1-0 and really controlled play the entire first half. We got a good shot but were unlucky and hit the post. That prevented us from going up 2-0 in the half. Then
Adam Antalis picked up a bordeline second yellow card in the second half and momentum shifted to Franklin when we went down a man. That led to the two goals for Franklin.
"However, we fought back and scored the goal by Geno with less than two minutes and just missed a potential game-winner with about 10 seconds left in regulation. Then Franklin got the breakaway in overtime and put it away for the win. Again it was a very well-played match by our guys. It's just unfortunate with the red card situation that really helped determine the outcome of the match."
Datyon Jennings finished the match with three saves out of six shots on goal by the Grizzlies. Franklin outshot Wabash 10-9 overall. James, Magura, and
George Vinihakis tallied two shots apiece in the contest. Franklin goalkeeper Lucas Hill recorded six saves to earn the victory.
Wabash (1-3-1) travels to Louisville, Kentucky Saturday to play Spalding University at 2 p.m.
