Box Score Zach Woloshin and
Adam Antalis netted first half goals Friday to lift Wabash to a 3-0 season-opening home win over Bluffton University.
Wabash came out of the gate strong, scoring their opening goal less than ten minutes into the match. The first score came when Woloshin was able to head an
Ivaylo Mantchev free kick into the back of the net for the first goal of the Little Giant campaign. Wabash scored once more before the half, when a loose ball squeaked past the Bluffton defense finding the waiting feet of
Adam Antalis who deposited the ball into the goal. The final Little Giant goal came midway through the second half when
Max Rowley hammered a shot from twenty-two yards out into the upper ninety of the goal.
"We finished our chances," Head Coach
Chris Keller said. "We got on the attack. We need to clean things up a little bit defensively with some shape, but we came out, went at them, followed the game plan, and took care of business."
Mantchev,
Mike Gore, and
Steve Magura each had an assist on the day.
          Â
"With the scoreline itself," Mantchev said, "it goes to show that we finished strong last year against wooster and we're starting strong. We're sending out a warning to the conference with what we're going to be about this year."
          Â
Antalis paced the Little Giants with four shots, two of which were on frame. Woloshin,
Rodrigo Porras, Gpre, and
Riley Pelton each had two shots. Wabash out shot the Beavers 17 to 2 on the day and had six more corners than Bluffton.
Dayton Jennings recorded his third career shutout in goal for Wabash, turning aside one shot on goal.
The victory marked the first season-opening win for Wabash since a 2-1 victory at Anderson University in 2010. The last time the Little Giants scored three goals in their first match of the season was in a 3-1 win at 23-ranked Wheaton College in 2009.
Wabash (1-0) travels to Earlham Tuesday, September 2 for a 5 p.m. contest.
