Box Score Steve Magura scored in the opening three minutes, which proved enough to push the Little Giants past Hiram College in their NCAC opener.
Â
The lone goal of the match came when
Riley Pelton played a ball through to an on-running Magura. The senior forward took a single touch before firing the ball to the left of the lunging goalkeeper and into the back of the Hiram net.
Â
The goal proved to be the only shot on goal for Wabash, but a staunch Wabash back four, led by goalkeeper
Dayton Jennings, would keep the Terriers with a zero on the scoreboard. The shutout was the fifth of the season for Jennings and seventh overall for the Little Giant defense.
Â
"It was good to score early," Wabash Head Coach
Chris Keller said. "We came out sharp. But I give credit to Hiram for playing well. They had some good passing and movement. We knew what to expect from them. Having said that, a lot of the action was in the middle of the field. It was just a typical NCAC battle."
Â
Hiram outshot Wabash by a tally of nine to five and was outshot six to nothing in the second half. Hiram also had three more shots on goal than the Little Giants.
Dayton Jennings made four saves in the match. He also got the win on the day.
Â
Wabash was paced by Magura with two shots on the day. Corey Sims,
Blake Jennings, and
Stojan Krsteski all had a single shot in the match.
Â
"[It was a] good first game in conference," sophomore
Rodrigo Porras said. "It was a bit shaky here and there but we came out strong and got the win. It was a great start for the conference tournament and hopefully we can keep that up."
Â
The win was Wabash's seventh on the year, bringing the overall record to 7-0-2. This is the longest unbeaten start to the season the team has had since a 9-01 open in 1986. The victory also marked the first NCAC win to open the season since a 2-1 double-overtime result against Wooster in 2009.
Â
The Little Giants will look to match the school record of ten straight unbeaten games to start the season this Tuesday night at the College of Mount Saint Joseph.
