Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame
Bernard “Bennie” Fellerhoff, native of Muncie, Indiana, you ushered in an era of Wabash basketball now known as the “golden age,” when the Little Giants made a string of appearances in the national tournament and knocked off universities ten times the size of Wabash. Your long arms and soft hands made you a dynamic rebounder, and newspaper reports indicate there was nobody better at put-back baskets. You made the Wabash varsity squad in all four of your years at Wabash. As a sophomore, you were a consistent starter and led the team in scoring at 16 points per game, earning Most Valuable Player honors on a young, but talented team. The highlight of the year was a win over the University of Iowa, one of six victories for Wabash that year. A year later, you had a break-out season, earning MVP honors yet again and helping turn around a slow start to lead the Little Giants to five wins in their last seven games.
You upset a heavily favored Butler University team, 77-67, and celebrated a late-season win over rival DePauw. During a hot streak late in the 1956-57 season, you drained 36 points to break the school record, though your friend and former Hall of Famer Tom Bennett would unseat your record five games later. You and Bennett led the 1958 team to the NCAA College Division Tournament, where you nearly upset Evansville in overtime, but rallied to knock off Austin Peay in the consolation round. You led that talented team in scoring, at 18.6 points per game, and rebounding with nine boards per contest. And what could be sweeter than becoming the College’s all-time leading scorer in a game against DePauw?
You would end your career with 1,123 points, 15th best all-time, while your career scoring average of 14.8 points per game is 12th highest in school history. So, for helping restore Wabash’s winning basketball tradition with excellent play on both ends of the court, the National Association of Wabash Men is pound to induct you, Bennie Fellerhoff, in the Wabash Athletics Hall of Fame. Some Little Giant!
