Jason Alonzo Cain ’93
Wabash Athletics Hall of Fame
November 12, 2010

Jason Alonzo Cain, native of Portage, Indiana, the NAWM is proud to honor you on this celebratory occasion. You came to Wabash in the fall of 1989 as a Presidential Scholar and ushered in an era of unparalleled success for Wabash swimming and diving. And lest anyone argue with that claim, consider the accomplishments: You swam on teams that posted a 37-0 dual met record and captured 16 major invitational titles, including four straight Liberal Arts Invitationals and four DePauw Invitationals. You were a four-year letterman, two-time captain, and helped Wabash place in the top 20 at the NCAAs four years running.

While you were a four-year star for Coach Gail Pebworth, your senior year was one for the record books: High point swimmer at the Liberal Arts Invitational; ICAC and Wabash Most Valuable Swimmer; captain of the team that placed eighth at the NCAA’s; Scholar All-American; and you helped break 19 school records — five of which still stand. By the end of your career, you were a five-time All-American, seven-time Honorable Mention All-American, and three-time Scholar All-American. At graduation you held two Wabash backstroke records, three relay records, and had scored more points than any other swimmer in Wabash history.

A dean’s List student who majored in math and minored in economics, you were the founding president of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. When she recruited you as a high school swimmer, Coach Pebworth challenged you to pursue excellence in all that you do.

The National Association of Wabash Men believes you have honored your coach’s charge, and is pleased to induct you in the Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame. Jason Cain — Some Little Giant!
