Kurt Michael Casper, you are best known as the wide receiver whose catch in the 2001 Monon Bell Classic ended a long winning streak by DePauw and ushered in two decades of truly spectacular football at Wabash College.
While “The Catch” is how most people know you, those of us who are wide receivers know how consistently great you were as a four-year letterman and three-year starter. You played so hard, game in and game out, that it is no wonder you posted the incredible statistics you did.
You led Wabash in receiving in your sophomore and junior years — becoming one of only four players ever to haul in more than 1,000 yards in receptions in a single year. You were a two-time First Team All-Conference receiver and your teammates voted you MVP after your senior season in 2001.
Your name is everywhere in the record books – most receptions in a game (17), most receiving yards in a game (250), and twice you caught four touchdown passes in a game. By the end of your career, you had caught 205 passes (third all-time) for 2,806 yards (second all-time), and 27 touchdowns. You also recorded nearly 1,000 yards in kick returns.
Kurt, your teammates called you a “gamer” and you have inspired all of us who play your position for the last 20 years. On behalf of the National Association of Wabash Men, it is my honor to induct you into the Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame.
