Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame
Matt McGuire, you were the kind of hard-throwing pitcher every coach dreams about: You would go to the mound every few days and consistently keep your team in the game. In fact, sometimes you’d throw a complete game Saturday and come on in relief Sunday afternoon. You were reliable, consistent, and always kept batters guessing.
Â
Your career flew under the radar to a certain extent. When you arrived here, Wabash was in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference, which became the Heartland Conference, and by the time you graduated, you were competing in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Â
It didn’t matter. You brought the gas regardless of the opponent and became one of Wabash’s all-time greatest starting pitcher.
Â
To do the numbers, it goes like this: You went 23-17 overall in your career, setting Wabash all-time records for wins, innings pitched (271), strikeouts (277), and appearances (58). Your 25 complete games are second-most all-time.
Â
You were especially dominant as a sophomore and junior, going 17-9 with 19 complete games, striking out 162 batters in 159 innings. Your ERA over those two seasons was a sparkling 2.66. To this day, you own three single-season records, including most wins with nine in 1998, while your eight wins a year later is second-most ever. You struck out 11 or more batters six different times in your illustrious career.
Â
Fittingly, your last-ever start for Wabash was a nine-inning, complete-game victory over new NCAC rival Denison, during which Wabash rallied in the bottom of the ninth for the win.
Â
Matt, in an era of baseball when starters rarely make it beyond the fifth inning, you were always a consistent, go-to ace. So, it’s a great honor to secure your place in Wabash’s incredible baseball history by enshrining you in the Athletics Hall of Fame.
Â
Matt McGuire, you are Some Little Giant!
