Maurice "Red" Robinson came to Wabash in 1923 after an outstanding Indiana high school basketball career. He was twice named all-state an:d received the Gimble Award (now the Trestor Award) in 1923.
At Wabash, Red participated in football, tennis, track, and basketball. He excelled in all four sports and was the state champion pole vaulter on Wabash's track team. Basketball, however, was his top sport. The nation's sportÂs writers named him all-western at forward in 1925 after Wabash posted an unbelievable 18-1 record against such foes as Vanderbilt, Notre Dame and Kentucky. Robinson was also the state speech champion and even won the 1926 National Oratorical ConÂtest before graduating from Wabash with honors.
Robinson played several seasons of professional basketÂball and went on to Harvard Law School. He later served as coach of the Centerville High School basketball team. Robinson served as Secretary of State, Indiana State Commissioner, president of the State Board of Law Examiners and as champion pole vaulter on Wabash's track team. Robinson served as Secretary of State, Indiana State Commissioner, president of the State Board of Law Examiners and as a member of the Indian Board of Education. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1965. Robinson died in 1975.
