David W. Husted ’69

David W. Husted, the National Association of Wabash Men is proud to honor your athletic achievements at this occasion. You matriculated to Wabash in the fall of 1966 from Indianapolis Howe High School, where you were a standout three-sport athlete in wrestling, track, and football. You would star as a three-year letterman in football and wrestling at Wabash — and you would have earned four letters had freshmen been eligible to compete, a rule overturned in your sophomore year. You were a bruising and feared defender on the football team — the best of your era. As a sophomore, you were the key defensive player in a 0-0 tie against a mighty Augustana team; your sure tackling, fumble recovery, and role in a third-quarter goal line stand helped shutout the Vikings.

As a junior, Wabash suffered under new Coach Max Urick’s leadership, and entered the Monon Bell Game with a 1-7 record. DePauw, under Tommy Mont, was 7-1 and a huge favorite to win the game. In what is now known as the Mud Bowl of 1967, you helped the Little Giants pull off what’s been described as the greatest upset in Monon Bell history, a 7-0 shutout of the Dannies in muddy, sloppy Blackstock Stadium. As a senior gridiron standout, you were the MVP of the Monon Bell Game and your play was so impressive, you earned a tryout with the Oakland Raiders and played with the team throughout the exhibition season of 1969.

You distinguished yourself as a wrestler, too, going 10-2 and earning Most Improved honors as a sophomore; the Wabash yearbook called you the best heavyweight since Max Servies in 1958. The following year, you won the GLCA Championship and helped Wabash dismantle Notre Dame 21-12. You were elected captain and Most Valuable Wrestler as a senior when you went 19-1, took the GLCA title, and set records for most wins, most points, most falls, and posted the best overall record at heavyweight with a 46-4-3 career mark. Your accomplishments in both sports earned you the coveted Pete Vaughan Award as the outstanding athlete of 1969. A history major, you went on to a long and successful career in paper sales and redistribution, coaching CYO wrestling, and staying active in your church and community.

Your athletic career brought honor to your alma mater, and for that, the National Association of Wabash Men is proud to induct you, David W. Husted, in the Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame.
