Known affectionately as "DJ", Daryl Johnson will be forever remembered as one of the most outstanding offensive football players to ever wear the scarlet. A native of Indianapolis and graduate of Broad Ripple High School, Johnson came to Wabash to play football for coach Stan Parrish in 1978. With Johnson as a member of the team, Wabash reeled off one of the finest four-year records ever, 32-3-1, from 1978-81, including an undefeated season in 1980. He majored in speech, but he ran with the energy of a freight train and the moves of a dancer. He remains Wabash's all-time leading rusher with 3,232 yards and the school's all-time leading scorer with 270 points. Twice he led all of Division III in scoring, including the 1980 season when he scored 20 touchdowns for 120 points. Johnson dashed for over 1,000 yards in both 1980 and 1981, and narrowly missed that milestone with 907 yards in his sophomore season. In helping Wabash to an 8-0-1 undefeated season in 1980, Johnson rushed 225 times for 1, 102 yards with 20 touchdowns. His career average of 89. 7 yards per game ranks second only to Stan Huntsman. A Division III All-American and team captain, Johnson also excelled as a track man, earning four letters in that sport too. He helped Wabash to a 9-1 dual meet record in 1980, the year the Little Giants won the Little State title. Wabash was second in Johnson's senior year, a year that saw the Little Giants go 7-2 in dual meets. Johnson continues to serve his alma mater as a member of the Alumni Board. He is a member of the Deacon Board at the New Hope Baptist Church. He is currently Vice President of Manufacturers Transport Inc. in Indianapolis.
