White earned seven letters in Little Giant cross country and track, fulfilling the promise he had shown in his Peoria, Illinois, high school running. In the fall of 1971, White combined with Dick Bowerman '72 (a 1984 Wabash Athletic Hall of Fame inductee) to create a formidable one-two punch, as the pair dominated most meets, culminating with their showing at the NCAA College Division Championships.

On the track, as a junior, White earned All-America honors as the NCAA College Division Steeplechase champion and set the Wabash record in the event. Appropriately White went on to earn an M.D. --- specializing in orthopedics and sports medicine --- from the University of Illinois and to teach orthopedics at the University of Mississippi. He moved on to specialize in fracture surgery in Portland, Maine. He enjoys kayaking and skiing in his free time.
