Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame
They say you really had to be there on that unseasonably warm December day in Northeast Ohio back in 2011. I was just a kid, but the legend reads like history and today at Wabash College, C.J. Gum is the linebacker we all aspire to be.
Â
On December 3rd in Alliance, Ohio, Wabash battled second-ranked Mount Union to the wire in one of the Purple Raiders’ closest games of the year. The hosts got off to a quick start, but Mount Union had few answers for Wabash’s swarming defense—passing for a season-low 100 yards and mustering only 236 yards in the game—one of their worst offensive performances of the season.
Â
And one reason for that was your play, C.J. You made three quarterback sacks in the first 20 minutes of the game and went on to make a game-high 13 tackles in the biggest—and last—game of your career. After the game, Mount Union’s Hall of Fame Coach, Larry Kehres, said you played one of the finest games he’d ever seen by an opposing linebacker.
Â
But it was just another day at the office for you; you had 15 tackles against sixth-ranked North Central; 16 in Wabash’s 45-7 rout of DePauw in Greencastle; 11 in a win at Allegheny; and 13 tackles (four for loss) in a big win over Washington University.
Â
You finished your career with 297 tackles. You earned the North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year twice and were a First Team AFCA All-American.
Â
C.J., you continued Wabash’s decades-long tradition of producing game-breaking linebackers, and we are proud to join with the NAWM to induct you in the Wabash Athletics Hall of Fame. C.J. Gum, you are Some Little Giant!
