Vaino Grayam, a native of Sullivan came to Wabash in 1951 and made an immediate impact: on Little Giant athletics. He and his talented toe, booted 35-39 extra points as placekicker on Wabash's 7-0-1 football team. As a sophomore Grayam was elevated to,starting quarterback in addition to his kicking duties. As quarterback he guided the Little Giants to a record of-18;7-2. Under Grayam, the Little Giants were 2-1 against a good Butler University team and 3--0 against arch rival DePauw University. In fact, Grayam helped Wabash to three of its most impressive victories over the Tigers 47-0, 42-0 and 28-0. Grayam won four varsity letters in football and was named the Most Valuable Player as a senior. As a catcher on the baseball team, Grayam excelled even further. A four-year letterman, Grayam captained the team in 1953-55. Now a dedicated teacher of history and Spanish in the Greenwood school system, Grayam also operates a successful insurance business. Grayam also served the citizens of Greenwood on the city council and later as mayor.
