Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame
Dale Doyne Davis came to Wabash in 1932 from Flora, Indiana, and was a three-year letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. Davis captained the basketball team in 1935-36, and was selected as a member of the Little All-State Team in football.
He played guard in both football and basketball and was a left-handed pitcher whose performance record often read "three hits, 12 strike outs, and 12 bases on balls." In 1941 Davis returned to Wabash as basketball and baseball coach, as well as assistant football coach. His 1942-43 basketball team earned double victories over both Butler and DePauw and was proclaimed Indiana College State Champions with a 15-6 record, including a season-ending streak of 14 consecutive wins.
As an athlete, Davis spent one year in the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball organization and 11 years as a semi-pro baseball player in the Indiana-Ohio League. During his stay in Crawfordsville, Davis served as president of the Crawfordsville School Board and the Crawfordsville Dramatic Club, thus demonstrating that his talents were not confined to the athletic fields.
