Bowerman was a four-year letterman and MVP of the cross country team. He also won four varsity letters in track and was a two-time MVP winner.

The holder of virtually every distance record at Wabash, he was an All-American in both track and cross country and participated in the 1976 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 10,000 meters.

Following his graduation from Wabash in 1972, he went to the Indiana University School of Medicine and is now a cardiologist in Tampa, Florida and an assistant professor of medicine at the South Florida Medical School. He still enjoys athletics as a member of the University of South Florida cycling team.
