Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame
Vaughn Eric Verduin, you came to Wabash from Indianapolis Franklin Central High School as a promising collegiate swimmer. But not even the ever-optimistic Gail Pebworth, who recruited you, could have imagined how fully you would pursue excellence.
Over the course of four seasons, you were a part of some of the very finest swimming and diving teams in Wabash College history. Indeed, if there ever was a “Golden Age” of Wabash swimming, it was perhaps when you swam for the Little Giants. You and your teams never lost a dual meet in four years, going 37-0 from 1989 through 1993. During that time, Wabash as a team won four straight Liberal Arts Invitational titles, four straight DePauw Invitational titles, four Little State championships, and in your senior year, you helped Wabash win the Notre Dame Invitational. You were a superb “big meet” swimmer, saving your very best performances for the end of the season, which landed you at nationals in all four of your Wabash seasons. In two of those seasons, you helped the Little Giants to an eighth place finish at the national championships.
In 1991, you captured High Point Swimmer honors at the Liberal Arts Invitational, and you ended your career as a 15-time All-American at the National Championships. You were an eight-time All-American and seven-time honorable mention All-American. You set Wabash records in the 100 and 200 freestyle events, and swam the anchor leg on five school-record relay teams. You were also a part of two pool record-setting relay teams. In 1991 you earned the team’s “Some Little Giant Award” for your incredible performance at the Liberal Arts Invitational. In 1993, you were a co-captain and earned the Pete Vaughan Award as the outstanding athlete in the senior class.
Vaughn Eric Verduin, for your constant pursuit of excellence and ferocious competitive spirit, the National Association of Wabash Men is proud to induct you in the Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame.
