Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame
A native of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Cauthen was a three-sport athlete out of Canon McMillian High School. As a prep athlete, Cauthen excelled in cross country, track, and wrestling. At Wabash he earned 10 letters in those sports.
A four-year letterman and fine leader, Cauthen captained the wrestling squad and was the Little State runner-up in 1963. On Coach J. Owen Huntsman's highly-competitive running teams of the mid '60s, Cauthen lettered three times each in cross country and track. Cauthen made his mark as an 880 man who also anchored a leg of the two-mile relay. Cauthen left Wabash to become a teacher in Gary. Later, he moved to Detroit where he taught Spanish and English at Henry Ford High School while taking night classes at Wayne State University. He received his law degree in 197 5 and left teaching in 1979 to serve as deputy director of the Detroit Non-Profit Housing Corporation for six years. In 1985 he returned to teaching and was recognized in Who's Who Among Black Americans. This year Cauthen was a finalist for Michigan's Teacher of the Year Award.
