Chad E. Tabor ’99
Wabash Athletics Hall of Fame
November 12, 2010

Chad E. Tabor, your decision to follow in your brother Shawn’s footsteps to Wabash was one of the greatest decisions ever — for the Wabash basketball program. When you arrived in the fall of 1995 from New Castle, Indiana, Wabash’s basketball program was mired in a funk of four losing seasons in the previous five years. That all changed once you broke into the starting lineup early in your freshman year. You played alongside your brother, the team’s MVP in 1996, to help the Little Giants to a 12-12 record with a glimpse of excellence to come.

In the three years that followed, Wabash went 63-19, won back-to-back Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference championships, played into the second round of the NCAA Tournament two years in a row, and you earned three straight Most Valuable Player awards. Twice you were named the ICAC Player of the Year, and you were an NABC Second Team All-American in 1997. Your statistics speak for themselves — 1,888 points, 536 rebounds, 127 steals, 119 three-pointers, 83 blocked shots, and school records for most free throws (535) and games started (103 in a row). You rank in the top 10 in 17 different all-time statistical categories.

But this association recognizes that your value went far beyond the stat line. You brought hunger, passion, and grit to a team that had been, at times, soft. You brought a street game mentality — high flying slam dunks, behind the back passes, and just enough in-your-face attitude to propel Wabash to 24 wins in 1997 and 22 wins in 1998 — not to mention five straight wins over DePauw. Furthermore, you brought excitement back to Chadwick Court; those on hand for heavyweight bouts with Rose-Hulman, Franklin, Manchester, and Chicago will never forget how thrilling those games were or your dynamic play. We would be remiss if we didn’t give specific mention to your 34-point performance in an 83-75 win over Franklin for the 1998 ICAC Championship — one of the hardest-fought games ever played at storied Chadwick Court.

The National Association of Wabash Men takes its basketball seriously, and we are therefore proud to place you alongside the legendary greats of the hardwood in the Wabash College Athletics Hall of Fame. Chad Tabor — Some Little Giant!
